Neymar purchased by the PSG for €222M, the FC Barcelona found himself with enormous financial power to replace the French international. Much of it was then spent recruiting Ousmane Dembele’s coming from Borussia Dortmund. The latter was then preferred to… Kylian Mbappé. In 2017, the latter left Monaco for PSG, but Barça was in the race and could have won. “If I had asked, he would have come to Barça. When they paid €222m for Neymar, we had the money to sign him, but the sports management was clear and we should bring Dembélé instead. I went to look for Mbappé and spoke with his father. He would have come. There was a moment, on the 30th, when I even thought we were going to bring him in,” admitted Javier Edgesformer Blaugrana manager.
Who preferred Dembélé to Mbappé at Barcelona?
Rather than Kylian Mbappéthe FC Barcelona therefore turned to Ousmane Dembélé. A choice which must today arouse regrets in Catalonia. “Bordas affirmed that the arrival of Mbappé was a real possibility, he even spoke with his entourage. In comments given to RMC, Sergi Soléjournalist for Mundo Deportivo, revealed the identity of the person responsible, pointing to the former sporting director of FC Barcelona : “Dembélé, it was Robert Fernandez who wanted him”.
