Milan struggle against Roma in semi-final, missing chances and finding no solutions

Nothing is compromised yet for the semi-final, but Milan let their ideas be clouded by Roma, without ever finding a way to take control of the match. The score is always too the same, the maneuver is predictable and without ever a real twist. It’s also true that too many Rossoneri cheat at the best moment.

Maignan 6

Mancini emerges undisturbed in the middle of a clogged area. In those situations it is almost impossible to intervene. Previously, he responded well to El Shaarawy’s deflected shot.

Calabria 6

He acts as a pendulum: full-back when not in possession, midfielder or almost midfielder when it comes to building. However, it is not easy to reposition yourself in time when Roma recover the ball.

Cage 6.5

He takes Lukaku and doesn’t give him a ball inside the Rossoneri area. Big Rom manages to make some plays on the midfield, taking advantage of his physique. But it is the Rossoneri who wins the duel, so much so that the Belgian gets nervous in a couple of situations. After having stolen the ball from Abraham he becomes “greedy”, but his shot from distance is unwatchable.

Thiaw 6

He often finds himself without a man to mark or a point of reference among his opponents. And not even ready to widen to double El Shaarawy. Furthermore, unlike Gabbia, he shows a little too much hesitation when Lukaku comes near him.

Theo Hernandez 5.5

El Shaarawy wide to the right forces him to stay low. And when he gets up, he concedes the field to his opponent, who sinks repeatedly. He tries to shake himself up in the second half, but only finds space when El Shaarawy feels tired.

Bennacer 5

He goes first on Dybala, who doesn’t have a position but is free to vary. He sacrifices himself, applying himself to a task that is not really up to him. But this way he loses clarity in managing the ball. The light doesn’t even come on in the shot, so he’s the first to go.

Adli (14′ st) 6

Aside from a bad foul, he dedicates himself more to directing than Bennacer. And with a cross, halfway with a shot, he almost mocks Svilar, who has to smash it onto the crossbar.

Reijnders 6

He is the most dangerous Rossoneri: in the first half, a diagonal shot to the far post and then a razor to the first. But Svilar is not surprised. He starts again in the same way in the second half, but the visiting goalkeeper continues to block.

Pulisic 5,5

On more than one occasion he runs behind Spinazzola, gaining the space to cross freely or to aim for the area. Except his foot isn’t as precise as usual. He also reduced his punctuality in retreats. It remains to be seen whether it was an indication from Pioli or a choice made by him.

Chukwueze (33′ st) 6,5

He breaks through from the right, drinking two Giallorossi in a handkerchief, and then giving a chocolate to Giroud, who “discards” it… against the crossbar.

Loftus-Cheek 5

Worn out. She can’t make anyone feel her size. Also because Paredes is quick to close spaces and trajectories. The most serious fault, however, was letting Mancini slip away from the Giallorossi’s lead.

Leo 4.5

He too is affected by El Shaarawy’s position: he lacks Theo Hernandez’s shoulder and Celik is always very careful. He then tries to centralize, trying his luck in the middle of the area. But he only extracts an imprecise overhead kick from his hat. The good ball happens to him in the second half, but he hits Celik again. It is emblematic that Pioli recalls him. And even more so that the Rossoneri San Siro, with the exception of the curve, boo him loudly.

Okafor (33’ st) sv

Unlike Chukwueze, he is unable to enter the game: he does not receive balls and does not take initiatives.

Giroud 5

Twice, in the space of a few seconds, his head appears higher than the others in the middle of the yellow-red area. Both times, however, his gores hit Lukaku. His match was one of extreme suffering, caught in the middle between Mancini and Smalling. That crossbar hit by a metre, however, is a serious stain.
