Meloni: ‘I hope that in June there will be a different EU’

“This is the last European Council of this legislature and despite the work done in recent months, such as that on migrants, I hope that when we meet in June we will be faced with a different Europe.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the end of the EU summit.

As for Draghi, the prime minister said she was happy “that we are talking about an Italian but this debate is philosophy. I will never agree with the tendency to decide before the citizens vote. It is the citizens who decide the majorities, for I will not participate in the debate” on the possible appointment of Mario Draghi to the EU summit. “What interests me is that both Draghi and Enrico Letta, who are considered two pro-Europeans, tell us that Europe must be changed.”

The President of the Council met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen this morning at the Europa Building, before the resumption of the work of the European Council. At the center of the conversation was an update on the results of the visit to Tunisia, also in relation to the implementation process of the Memorandum and the Mattei Plan, the concrete initiatives that can be implemented in light of the conclusions on the situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and a discussion on the themes of European competitiveness in view of this morning’s discussion among the leaders.
