Medina del Campo Becomes the Epicenter of Spanish Badminton for the Top Master Senior Event

There is no weekend that Medina del Campo does not hold a sporting event. Last Saturday, the Fair Village hosted the Castillo de la Mota 5 and 10 kilometer race, and this weekend the physical activity moves from the streets of the town to the Pablo Cáceres Sports Center. On April 13 and 14, the municipality will become the epicenter of Spanish badminton by hosting the Top Master Senior.

This high-level event, which will bring together around 150 athletes, was presented this Tuesday, April 9 in the Hall of Shields of the Medina del Campo City Council. In addition to being organized by the Municipal Sports Service, it has the collaboration of the Badminton Federation of Castilla y León and the Medinense Sports Club.

The best rackets from all over the country will meet in the Valladolid town to take the podium in a test that will determine their participation in the Spanish Championship, which will be held during the month of May in Galicia.

The Councilor for Sports, Ricardo Coca, has placed special emphasis on the importance of this tournament. “There will be representation from all the autonomous communities, except Ceuta and Melilla,” he comments. This sporting event will bring together hundreds of senior players, between 30 and 70 years old, to play around 350 games on a total of nine courts; about 270 during the day on Saturday, and approximately 80 meetings on Sunday.

Juan Manuel Barrera Romera, president of the Badminton Federation of Castilla y León, has been in charge of providing the technical data. Thus, he explained that this test is part of the five national tests that will help participants qualify for the Spanish Championship. “Due to the situation in Medina, this tournament is quite important because there are many points that will be played,” he says.

This will be the third year that Medina del Campo hosts this tournament in the senior category. In total there will be 65 clubs from all over the country that will compete in this competition and, in the case of Castilla y León, fourteen of the twenty teams it has will attend. Due to its importance, close to a thousand visitors are expected throughout the weekend; an aspect that will benefit the town’s hospitality and hotel establishments.

The Top Senior Master will start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, and the last matches are scheduled to be played around 8:00 p.m. On this day it will take place from the group stage to the quarterfinals. Sunday’s event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the awards ceremony will take place around 2:00 p.m. In this event only semi-finals and finals will be played. The results can be consulted through the Spanish Badminton Federation tournament website.

This tournament, already consolidated in the calendar of all badminton players, will offer something new to its registrants. CD Medinense and the Regional Federation have made an effort and have created a participatory t-shirt. “The response has been great from all the athletes,” says Barrera.

Medinense representation

The Top Senior Master will also have a representative from the Medinense Sports Club. Hugo Sanz will attend this event to measure himself against the rest of the opponents. The club hopes that the athlete is ready to compete in the matches. «He was injured in the last test in Tudela de Duero. He is being treated and we don’t know if he will be fine for this weekend,” says Javier Sanz, team coach.

On behalf of the Medinense badminton team, he highlighted the good work of all its players. “They are achieving very important results and we are very satisfied with all the work done,” he says. He has even detailed having two or three players “with very good projection and very motivated” with this sport.
