Mexican archer Maya Becerra won a silver medal in the Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China, her first individual in the World Archery 2024 series.

The Mexican captivated the hearts of archery fans in the exciting final of the World Cup. After a duel full of suspense and skill, the archer took home silver in the compound bow modality, falling to death sudden against the formidable Jyothi Surekha Vennam of India.

The Jalisco player tied 146-146 against Vennam, third in the world ranking, so the title had to be defined by a golden arrow.

For the second round, Maya took the lead with three perfect arrows, scoring 10 points each, while Surekha Vennam managed just a nine. This initial advantage placed the Guadalajara goalkeeper in a promising position.

Throughout the third and fourth innings, Maya managed to maintain her lead, staying calm and showing impressive accuracy with each throw. However, in the fifth and final round, an unfortunate shot by Becerra resulted in an eight, tying the score at 146-146 after five intense rounds.

To qualify for the grand final, the current world runner-up defeated the American Alexis Ruiz 147-146, who won the bronze medal after beating Meeri Paas, from Estonia, 145-141.

Becerra was close to reaching two podiums, as he formed a mixed team with Máximo Méndez Ortiz in the clash for bronze, in which they fell agonizingly 158-158 (19-20) against the Americans Olivia Dean and Kris Schaff.

For this Sunday, the legion of Aztec archers will conclude their participation in the contest with the duel for bronze between Alejandra Valencia Trujillo and Matías Grande Kalionchiz against the Indians Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara, in a mixed team.
