Maxence Lacroix: Making Bundesliga History with Another Suspension

Because he was thrown off the field again on Saturday, Maxence Lacroix was suspended again. The VfL Wolfsburg defender immortalized himself in several Bundesliga rankings.

Since moving from FC Sochaux to VfL Wolfsburg in 2020, Maxence Lacroix has never played more than 30 games in a Bundesliga season. But he always has himself to blame for this: last Saturday he was thrown off the field for the sixth time.

In the away game at Werder Bremen (2-0), the 23-year-old Frenchman improperly accepted a pass in his own half and brought down Romano Schmid, who then broke through – emergency brake. Despite all protests, referee Sascha Stegemann sent Lacroix, who had scored 1-0 just before half-time, off the pitch in the 76th minute and ensured a balanced final phase after Werder’s early dismissal (red for Anthony Jung, 43′).

On Wednesday, Lacroix learned his sentence: The DFB sports court imposed a two-game ban “due to unsportsmanlike conduct” – the same number as after the red card that the central defender received shortly before Christmas in Wolfsburg’s 1-0 win in Darmstadt by emergency brake after a poorly processed back pass.

Lacroix flew three times in 2021/22

This means that repeat offender Lacroix will be missing from new Wolves coach Ralph Hasenhüttl in the games against Borussia Mönchengladbach (Sunday, 5:30 p.m.) and at RB Leipzig (April 13, 3:30 p.m., both LIVE! on kicker). For VfL, it is important not to let the lead over the relegation place, which has been expanded to eight points, disappear again.

Lacroix has already made history: He is not only the first Bundesliga player to receive three dismissals in two seasons (like in 2021/22, twice red, once yellow-red), but also the youngest to have a total of six. The previous “frontrunner” was Luiz Gustavo, who was sent off for the sixth time on September 14, 2013 at the age of 26 years and 53 days. The Brazilian added two more, making him, along with Jens Nowotny, the record holder.
