Sports director Max Eberl from FC Bayern believes that national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract with the German Football Association will soon be extended and has apparently shelved the idea of bringing the former Munich coach back.
“As I know Rudi, he will do it, he will get the idea in the head,” said Eberl with a smile on Monday when asked whether he feared that DFB sports director Rudi Völler, after his own contract extension, would now also have Nagelsmann beyond the 2024 European Championship will bind.
The fact that Völler would commit to the DFB until the 2026 World Cup “was no longer a big surprise,” said Eberl before Bayern’s departure for the quarter-final first leg in the Champions League on Tuesday (9 p.m. / Prime Video) at Arsenal.
After the most recent international match against the Netherlands, “he has already indicated that many of the things he has initiated feel good for him,” said Eberl and, referring to Nagelsmann, added: “Now he will initiate more things that are good for him feel good.”
Völler, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and managing director Andreas Rettig had all recently made advances to Nagelsmann. The national coach also didn’t seem averse to extending his contract, which ends in the summer. However, he was also considered a candidate to succeed Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving Munich after this season.
Nagelsmann himself left his future open once again on Monday.
