Marianne Vos wins the stage, but does not reach the lead

The Dutch Mariane Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) further expanded her legend and achieved her 252nd victory as a professional after winning the sprint in the third stage of the women’s Cycling Tour of Spain, held this Tuesday between the Castellón town of Llucena and Teruel.

Vos, who spent a time of 3h 46:52 to complete the 130.2 kilometers of the route, used her highest speed in the final meters to beat her compatriot Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich Postnl), second, and the Canadian Olivia Baril (Movistar), who crossed the finish line in third position.

A victory that did not help, however, Marianne Vos to take first place in the general classification from the Hungarian Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime), who will continue wearing the red leader’s jersey for just one second, thanks to the two bonuses that the Magyar cyclist achieved in the intermediate sprint.

But neither Vos, who added his third stage victory in the Spanish round after the two he won last year, nor Vas could prevent the Spanish Mireia Benito from becoming the great protagonist of the day.

The Catalan runner from AG Insurance-Soudal monopolized all the spotlights after running away for more than one hundred kilometers.

Benito, the current Spanish time trial champion, had a lead of more than four minutes.

A time that made Mireia Benito dream of victory, but, despite her effort and determination, she could not prevent the peloton, led by the Visma runners, from reducing the distance until they caught it at 7.5 kilometers to finish.

In the final stretch, Visma controlled the race until reaching the finish line, where Marianne Vos, who will turn 37 on May 13, clearly imposed her law.

A triumph that the Dutch cyclist, three-time world long-distance road champion and Olympic gold medalist in London 2012, will try to repeat this Wednesday in the fourth stage, starting in Molina de Aragón and finishing in Zaragoza, and 142.3 kilometers of route.
