Manchester City player Kerstin Casparij has been suspended for one match in the English Women’s Super League for making an offensive gesture to opposing fans in the city derby against Manchester United last month.

She did this in the 37th minute of the game towards a section of United supporters, after her own team had taken the lead. In addition to the suspension, she also received a fine of more than 1,900 euros.

According to the English Football Association, Casparij herself admitted that her behavior was offensive. She will therefore have to miss next weekend’s match against West Ham United.

The 23-year-old Casparij has played 36 international matches for the Dutch national team to date. Before she played for Manchester City, she played for VV Alkmaar, sc Heerenveen and FC Twente.

Not the first

Casparij is not the first footballer to be discredited this calendar year due to an obscene gesture. At the end of March, West Ham United player Kalvin Phillips gave a middle finger to a supporter at the team bus.

Noa Lang was previously discredited in the Netherlands. The PSV attacker raised a middle finger to the Rotterdam audience after the lost cup match with Feyenoord on January 24 of this year.

Both men were not penalized for their gestures, which they made outside the match. That happened in the past in England. For example, Arsenal player Jack Wilshere once received a two-match suspension for raising his middle finger during a match. Luis Suárez was also suspended for this during his English period.
