Major change underway: OH Leuven, Antwerp, Cercle Brugge and Club Brugge affected – Football News

Many clubs are sponsored by gambling companies. On the equipment, those sponsors must only disappear on January 1, 2028, but in the stadium the fun will already be over on January 1, 2025. And that does have an impact on a number of clubs.

In the Jupiler Pro League, six clubs are sponsored by sports betting sites in their stadium. These can be found on the billboards in the stadium. But from January 1, 2025, sponsorship in this way will be stopped.

Sports betting advertisements are gradually being banned and banned in Europe. A problem for clubs that see a lucrative sponsor disappear, also towards 2028. Then all sponsorship will have to go, including the jerseys.

So for the time being ‘barely’ six teams are affected. Club Brugge and Charleroi (Unibet), Cercle Brugge and RWDM (Golden Palace), Antwerp (Betfirst) and OHL (Star Casino) have sponsorship on their boards.

Ten to twelve percent of income disappeared?

In Belgium, former Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne issued a Royal Decree to implement this reform. The goal was that only people who are consciously looking for information about gambling and sports betting can still find it.

As mentioned above, this reform does not benefit the clubs at all, which see potential major sponsors rendered useless. According to the CEO of the Pro League, Lorin Parys, the clubs’ income from sponsorship could fall by 10 to 12%.
