Luis Curbelo Joins Trois-Rivières Eagles for 2022 Season, Nate Scantlin Traded

Selected in the 6th round of the 2016 Major Baseball Draft, Curbelo played several seasons in the minor baseball leagues, at the rookie, A, A+ and AA levels. Used primarily as a third baseman, the 26-year-old has played all four positions in the infield.

“Luis Curbelo represents a great find for our team at this stage of the off-season. He displays great defensive versatility and will add power to our lineup on the right side of the plate. I love this type of player who is able to play in various positions in addition to hitting the ball all over the field,” said Eagles manager Matthew Rusch in a press release.

A six-foot-three-inch tall Curbelo made the jump to independent baseball last season with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League. He had a .262 batting average and 94 hits, including 13 home runs. This allowed him to produce 60 points.

Furthermore, the Trois-Rivières announced that they had traded outfielder Nate Scantlin to the Staten Island Ferry Hawks (Atlantic League) in return for future considerations to be determined before the start of camp. Having come to Mauricie via the transaction market, Scantlin ultimately spent a season with the team.

“This trade should bring us two good pitchers. This brings better balance on offense as well as defense and improves our pitching staff. Our outfielders remain one of our greatest strengths despite their departure. I would like to thank Nate for his contribution last year, as well as best of luck for the future.”

The Eagles will begin their 11th season on May 10 when they visit the home of the Sussex County Miners. The first match at Quillorama Stadium will be presented on May 17.
