Los Angeles Chargers Release Mike Williams, Las Vegas Raiders Reportedly Set to Release Hunter Renfrow

The Los Angeles Chargers have released wide receiver Mike Williams, the team announced Wednesday.

The move saves the Chargers an estimated $20 million this year. League rules require the Chargers to be under the $255.4 million salary cap as of 4 p.m. this Wednesday. Releasing Williams brings them into compliance with the salary cap.

Passenger Khalil Mack, meanwhile, will stay with the Chargers next season after agreeing to restructure his contract to save salary cap space, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Chargers selected Williams with the seventh pick in the 2017 draft. In seven seasons, Williams formed one of the league’s best wide receiver tandems with Keenan Allen. The Chargers rewarded him with a three-year, $60 million contract in 2022.

Williams’ last two seasons, however, were marred by injuries. Williams injured his back in the final minutes of the Chargers’ regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos in the 2022 season, forcing him to miss the playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

When Williams returned for the 2023 season, he injured his left knee in Week 3, suffering a torn ligament, and he missed the remainder of the season.

Williams, 29, has caught 309 passes for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns during his career.

Hunter Renfrow reportedly released by Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly close to releasing wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

The Raiders will thus save $8.21 million on their payroll.

Renfrow has spent the last five seasons in Las Vegas after being drafted in the fifth round in 2019.

He had his best career season in 2021, catching 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. This earned him a two-year contract extension worth $32 million and an invitation to the Pro Bowl.

In 17 games last year, he only amassed 255 yards.
