The top favorite has tumbled off its pedestal. If you want to win the Europa League, you have to beat Liverpool. And Atalanta had clearly understood that assignment. Charles De Ketelaere’s Italian team stormed Anfield with clever counters and put Liverpool firmly on the ground: 0-3. Jurgen Klopp needs a miracle in Bergamo to make his European dream come true again.

What a disappointment for Liverpool, who are on the hunt for trophies before the last dance of their coach Jürgen Klopp.

But after just a minute of play, the English would already be confronted with the facts against Atalanta. And you can take that very literally: Pasalic kicked the first counter from the clever Italians straight on the face of Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher.

Charles De Ketelaere’s team had not (yet) taken a lead, but it would be a symbolic harbinger of what was to come.

Although Liverpool – which did not play with a B-team, but did rest some key figures – controlled the match and even went three-cushion with the goal wood, it was Atalanta that surprised with some flashes.

De Ketelaere first cut his teammate Koopmeiners free, but he decided on the hands of goalkeeper Kelleher. But not much later it was the prize for the Italians. After one of the many counter-attacks on the right, Scamacca made it 0-1 just before half-time.

    It became silent at Anfield.

A strange silence that would fall over the field again on the hour. De Ketelaere cashed in his deserving pot and wonderfully painted the double lead at the foot of Atalanta hero Scamacca.

And to make matters worse for Klopp – who stood there and watched – Pasalic calmed the English’s final offensive on the rebound: 0-3.

The chance that Klopp will be able to celebrate his farewell with a European title is suddenly very small.
