Jürgen Klopp’s team has to accept the next bitter setback in the race for the English football championship. Despite their clear superiority, West Ham is once again unable to win. An old shortcoming became a nuisance again.

Liverpool FC has suffered the next and possibly decisive setback in the race for the English championship. A few days after the 2-0 defeat in the city derby at Everton FC, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team failed to score more than 2-2 (0-1) at West Ham United on Saturday despite being clearly superior. This means the Reds remain third in the table with 75 points, but have already played one game more than leaders Arsenal FC (77 points) and two more than defending champions Manchester City (76).

Andy Robertson (48th minute) and an own goal from goalkeeper Alphonse Aréola (65th) scored the visitors’ goals in London. Jarrod Bowen (43rd) and Michail Antonio (65th) were successful for Hammers coach David Moyes’ team. On Sunday, Arsenal can pull away further with a win in the derby against north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur (3 p.m.), shortly afterwards Manchester City will play at Nottingham Forest (5:30 p.m., both in the WELT sports ticker).

Once again Liverpool’s final stop was at the post

Liverpool dominated the game from the start in London’s Olympic Stadium, but were often too imprecise in front of goal. The best opportunity was initially missed by Brahim Díaz, who hit the post with a low shot (40′). It was the Reds’ 23rd aluminum hit of the current season. It’s almost unbelievable bad luck, a shortcoming that has long since become Liverpool’s curse this season.

West Ham only had real chances shortly before half-time and took the lead straight away from the second. Bowen headed a short corner to make it 1-0 and his 16th goal of the season.

After the substitution the equalizer was promptly achieved. Robertson, who was served by Díaz, also hit the post, but the ball bounced further into the goal from the inside. The superior guests continued to increase the pressure, and after just over an hour the effort was rewarded. Cody Gakpo didn’t hit the ball properly after a corner, but it ended up in the net after being deflected by three West Ham players.

In one of the home team’s few attacks, Antonio made it 2-2 with a header from Bowen’s cross. In the final stages, Liverpool pushed for victory, but Harvey Elliott powerfully hit the crossbar in the 90th minute.
