Leverkusen against Werder before being crowned champions

Bayer Leverkusen are only missing a home win on Sunday against Werder Bremen (5:30 p.m.) to be crowned champions in the German Bundesliga for the first time. “The anticipation is great. It can’t be bigger. If we win, we are champions,” said coach Xabi Alonso, whose team was ridiculed as “Vicekusen” for decades.

Winning the title in the 29th round would be the third earliest in the German Bundesliga. Leverkusen is unbeaten in 42 competitive games this season and, after a win, would be an unassailable 16 points ahead of Bayern, who have always been champions since 2012/13. Midfielder Granit Xhaka warned: “We must not appear over-motivated.”
