Lee So-hee and Baek Hana, ranked second in the women’s doubles world rankings, won the March MVP award at the 2024 MBN Women’s Sports Awards announced on the 30th. The two defeated Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) 2024 All England Open Women’s Doubles final held at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England on the 17th of last month.

I shook off the disappointment of last year’s runner-up finish. Lee So-hee and Baek Hana were defeated by Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank) in the finals of last year’s competition.

Korean badminton started in 1899 and has won the women’s doubles gold medal for two consecutive years at the 125th most prestigious tournament. Last year, Kim So-young and Gong Hee-young reached the top.

The two were ranked in the world’s top 100 in the second half of 2022, but they rose rapidly by winning three international competitions in the first half of last year alone. About four months before the Paris Olympics, he rose to the top of the All England Open, increasing his chances of winning an Olympic gold medal.

Lee So-hee said, “I am even more happy to have won the award this year as well as last year. I want to work harder and deliver good news after the Olympics.” Baek Hana also shared her thoughts on receiving the award, saying, “I was the winner in June last year, and I will prepare well with my sister so that I can receive it more often so that I can achieve good results this year as well.”

The MBN Women’s Sports Awards was established in 2012 to revitalize women’s sports and encourage female sportspeople in Korea. Every month, athletes who have shone in Korean women’s sports are selected and awarded as monthly MVPs.
