Latvian Wrestlers Compete in Olympic Qualification Matches – Results and Recap

Starting in the weight category up to 62 kilograms, Grigorieva defeated the Spaniard Lidia Perez-Turinho 9-0 in the first fight, but lost to the Moldovan wrestler Mariana Kerdivar-Esana 1-5 in the next round.

Athletes who reach the finals in each weight category will earn Olympic tickets.

Another Latvian wrestler, Elma Zeidler, in the weight up to 68 kilograms, did not make it past the first round, losing 0:10 to the neutral participant Hanuma Velieva.

Grigorjeva has competed in three Olympic Games, achieving her best success in 2021 in Tokyo, where she reached 5th place. Anastasija is the most successful wrestling athlete in Latvia – a five-time European champion, as well as a bronze medalist of the world championships in 2014 and 2017.

In the Greco-Roman fight, Aleksandrs Jurkyans recognized the superiority of Georgian Leri Abuladze 3:5 in the first fight in the Olympic qualification in the weight category up to 60 kilograms on Friday.

At the end of the tournament in Baku on Sunday, Latvia was represented by Ivars Samušonoks (86 kg) and Ralfs Lukins (125 kg) in freestyle wrestling, both losing their first bouts. Samushonoks recognized the superiority of neutral athlete Artur Naifonov (0:10), but Lukin conceded to Austrian Johannes Ludescher (2:13).

The last chance to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games in combat sports will be from May 9 to 12 at the world selection competition in Istanbul, where three athletes will get tickets in each weight category.
