Late goal gives Dortmund hope despite loss to Atletico in Champions League quarter-final

Dortmund can still hope!

BVB loses the quarter-final first leg against Atletico, losing 2-1 in Madrid. But: After a bad start, a late goal from Sébastien Haller (29) gives BVB hope for the semi-finals again.

In the Metropolitano cauldron (capacity for 70,460 spectators), coach Edin Terzic’s (41) team is initially overwhelmed.

The Ruhrpott club starts extremely nervously – and immediately concedes a goal.

4th minute: Keeper Kobel passes to Ian Maatsen on the edge of his own penalty area. The Dutchman plays a disaster pass into the foot of Madrid’s Rodrigo de Paul (29). He takes advantage of the mistake, stands free in front of Kobel and pushes in. 0:1!

Even worse: after 32 minutes, the next defensive trespass follows! Hummels (500th BVB game) and Schlotterbeck hinder each other when heading the ball. The ball lands via Griezmann at Samuel Lino (24), who makes it 0-2. Dortmund doubly stupid!

The black and yellow anger is unleashed on the sidelines – especially with BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl (44)!

58th minute: Dortmund captain Emre Can is injured on the ground, but Atletico continues to play. A no-go for Kehl!

He clashes with Atletico coach Diego Simeone and even stands head to head with the Argentine. Assistant coaches have to separate the arguments.

We haven’t seen Kehl like this in a long time! During his active career, he sometimes stood up in front of opponents with whom he argued. But: As a manager, you haven’t seen such an appearance from him so far.

For a long time it looks like an evening of frustration in Dortmund!

Until substitute Haller made it 1-2 in the 81st minute. BVB almost comes back completely. Bynoe-Gittens hammers the ball onto the crossbar (87th), Brandt also heads it into the crossbar (90th+5).

Terzic at DAZN: “We imagined coming into the game completely differently. The first 30 minutes just weren’t good enough and when you make so many mistakes at this level it’s usually over. But we didn’t accept that and then fought our way back. In the second half you could clearly see what we are capable of.”

BVB’s late rally gives hope for the second leg next Tuesday (9 p.m.).

Nevertheless, Dortmund needs a small European Cup miracle. Which has already been achieved one or two times in front of the yellow wall…
