Atletico Madrid’s perfect evening almost ended with an anticlimax. With Axel Witsel in the starting line-up, the sophisticated Madrilenians seemed to be freewheeling to a 2-0 victory against Dortmund for a long time, but in the end Sébastien Haller scored a vital goal for the visitors. There was almost a complete turnaround. Arthur Vermeeren and Julien Duranville remained on the bench for the entire match.

Attacking home team
With one Belgian at the kick-off and two on the bench, the match started just after 9 p.m. Atlético Madrid certainly did not miss its start. After 4 minutes it was already 1-0.
Borussia Dortmund could especially thank Borussia for this. The visitors wanted to play football away, but that quickly turned out wrong.
Goalkeeper Kobel passed centrally to Maatsen, who lost the ball. De Paul received the ball and finished in a controlled manner.
Moments later, Axel Witsel had a chance to make it 2-0, but after his spectacular deviation, Kobel made an excellent save. Witsel was also offside.
Atlético Madrid continued to play offensively and pushed Dortmund back. The second goal did not come out of the blue. Once again the visitors made a mistake.
Two defenders misjudge a long throw-in. Griezmann served Samuel Lino nicely and the Brazilian finished with an icy calm.
Borussia Dortmund woke up towards half time. Oblak had to take action once, but the Atlético goalkeeper did not need a world save to keep Maatsen from making it 2-1.
Atletico Madrid forgets to push forward
Atlético Madrid’s dominance had already disappeared by the end of the second half. Even after the break, the home team chose to fall back on its habits and play more defensively.
That did create opportunities for Borussia Dortmund. Füllkrug, among others, gave Oblak some work.
Despite the deficit, the visitors continued to play football with a lot of patience. As a result, it did not create much danger. Atlético Madrid let it happen and showed just as little. Except for some weak shots, nothing happened for a long time.
The final quarter once again brought more experience. Samuel Lino should have scored his second of the evening, but from close range he could not get past goalkeeper Kobel.
Too late final offensive
Borussia Dortmund played better football thanks to 19-year-old Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. The Englishman who came on brought momentum to the left flank.
That changed thanks to a young Englishman. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was allowed to play football for fifteen minutes and made his mark. However, the tying goal was achieved thanks to two other substitutes.
Finally, Dortmund’s attack through the center succeeded. Brandt found Haller on the edge of the box. Molina’s intervention came too late and Haller was able to make it 2-1.
Dortmund thought they could push on and that almost resulted in a great equalizer. Bynoe-Gittens curled the ball towards goal, but thanks to Azpilicueta’s head the ball skimmed the crossbar and Atlético Madrid escaped.
The home team sweated until the final stages. In the meantime, a well-playing Axel Witsel went to the sidelines. In the very last minute it could easily have been 2-2. Julian Brandt headed against the intersection.
Atlético Madrid goes into last week’s second leg with a slight advantage.

It was a difficult last quarter of the game for Atletico Madrid. The home team seemed to have everything under control, but still took the 2-1. Borussia Dortmund believed in an (undeserved) draw, but Atletico survived. Everything is still open for the return match in Germany.

Just before the final whistle, Brandt makes the score 2-2. The German is allowed to head towards goal, but his aim is not good enough. The ball goes straight into the intersection.
