At the wheel of his McLaren, the British driver set the best time this Friday ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen will start 4th.

Briton Lando Norris will start in pole position for the sprint race of the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday, after setting the best qualifying time on Friday in Shanghai on a track made very slippery by the rain. The McLaren driver will start in front of the Mercedes of his compatriot Lewis Hamilton and the Aston Martin of Spaniard Fernando Alonso, 3rd, for the sprint which will start on Saturday at 5:00 a.m. (Paris time).

Triple world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), championship leader, will start 4th, ahead of Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), 5th, who once again did better than his teammate Charles Leclerc (7th). A little over 100 km long, covered in around thirty minutes, this race offers championship points: from eight points for the first to one point for the 8th. The Chinese Zhou Guanyu will start 10th at the wheel of his Sauber. The Shanghai native, who arrived in the elite in 2022, is the first Chinese in history to compete in Formula 1 in China. The French Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon will start 16th and 17th respectively.

The Chinese GP is the first of six rounds of the year to feature a sprint format, which changes the course of the weekend. Thus, the drivers only carry out one free practice session on Friday before qualifying for the sprint race on Saturday. After this race, the drivers will compete in “classic” qualifying, which will determine the starting grid for the Sunday GP.
