Bedridden after an operation on his right knee, Miguel Martínez saw his aspirations of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games disappear.

With a borrowed television, the boxer followed the participation of the Mexican delegation without knowing if one day he would be able to live that dream.

I saw the coordinators tired of bringing food to my room and I thought that it was no longer useful, my head was very bad. It made me want to cry thinking that it wasn’t going to look good and that my career was over, said the boxer, who is less than four months away from competing in Paris 2024.

After nine months of recovery, the support of two physical therapists and a very special inspiration, Martínez returned to training with the goal of becoming an Olympic medalist.

I started running and from then on everything was fine. The one who brought me forward was my grandfather, who trained me from the age of three. In a tree he put a bag of dirt and sawdust for me to train when I was a child. I remember that he hung it up and he gave me some very old gloves to throw my first punches; That’s how it all started, recalled the national representative in the 63.5 kilograms.

In 2020, shortly before Martínez’s injury, Don Heriberto passed away, which greatly saddened the boxer, originally from Durango.

They say I’m crazy, but I talk to him and he always tells me to keep the promise I made to him to reach the top. I am going to achieve it so that he feels proud and my entire career has its reward, commented the athlete, fifth place in the World Championship in Uzbekistan 2023.

With 15 years of experience, the team considers itself ready to fight against any opponent in Paris.

Since I was little I have been a fighter and very good. I can box in any style, be a boxer or stylist, fight long or short. I adapt to the rival that comes my way, he explained.

The man from Durango is confident that more Olympic places will be achieved in the last qualifier to be held in Thailand.

The team is very strong and more tickets can be achieved, including that of Rogelio Romero, whom I admire. The Mexican has power and power, they are already afraid of us and are thinking about confronting us. Our adversaries are going to have to prepare themselves psychologically, because we work three times as hard and we are warriors. There will be more places and medals in the Olympics.

After his participation in the summer competition, the tricolor has another dream in mind. When he turns professional he aspires to win world titles. One of the boxers that I admire the most is the Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko, I even have his last name tattooed of him, because I love the way he fights.

The boxer will continue his training at the CNAR while waiting for a possible camp in Europe before his debut in Paris.
