One of the biggest culprits here is concussion, which can cause permanent brain damage due to improper, mostly rushed, or no treatment at all. “We will never know what would have happened if we received another equally strong blow to the head during the game,” Manchester United and France star Raphael Varane candidly admits in an interview with the French sports newspaper L’Équipe. He is also among those whose health was secondary at times when the team needed a result, and neither coaches nor doctors thought it important to evaluate the risks. He advised his seven-year-old son to avoid playing with his head during training. “Even if it doesn’t cause immediate injury… I personally don’t know if I’ll live to be a hundred years old, but I know I’ve damaged my body…” Unfortunately, there aren’t many like him, and some are no longer with us.
