Jurij Rodionov Makes Winning Start at ATP Tournament in Munich

Jurij Rodionov made it over the first hurdle at an ATP tournament for the first time this year on his third attempt. The Lower Austrian beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 6:2 6:3 at the start of the clay court tournament in Munich on Tuesday. The reward is now the number one in the tournament.

After 1:24 hours, Rodionov converted his first match point against Vukic and booked the duel with Olympic champion and local hero Alexander Zverev. The German had a bye in the first round of the 250cc tournament. For the Austrian number three Rodionov, currently number 118 on the computer, it is the first meeting with the fifth in the world rankings.

Rodionov, who failed in the first rounds of Estoril and the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells this year, set the course for victory early on against Vukic. In the first round, the Lower Austrian took the Australian’s first serve for a 2-0 lead and later didn’t let the rebreak deter him. Rodionov brought the first set to a close with two more breaks. The Austrian only needed four attempts to convert a set ball.

In the second set, Vukic defended himself much more and almost took the service from Rodionov for a 1-0 lead. But Austria’s number three kept his nerve and got the break to make it 3-2. As a result, Vukic couldn’t do any more damage and Rodionov confidently brought home his first opening win at an ATP tournament this year. Rodionov is the last Austrian in the tournament after Dominic Thiem lost 4:6 4:6 to Spanish qualifier Aljandro Moro Canas on Monday.
