On Saturday evening, the coach of 1. FC Kaiserslautern was a guest in the current sports studio. The cult coach has been in office at the Pfalz club since February 14th and had previously enjoyed his supposed retirement for more than two and a half years.
Funkel’s return also pleases a very special coaching colleague: Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp (56)!

He surprises Funkel with a recorded clip that is played in the gym during Funkel’s performance.
Klopp: “Hi Friedhelm, little surprise here from Liverpool. The day after we got a 3-0 thrashing from Atalanta. Losing games is something no one really needs and you’ve already had it behind you and then you go back. From being a pensioner straight to the cup final, where can you find something like that.”
With Kaiserslautern, Funkel will face Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the cup final in Berlin on May 25th. In the semifinals, his team won 2-0 against third division team Saarbrücken.

One thing is clear: In the final, ex-Mainzer Klopp is keeping his fingers crossed for Funkel and underdog Kaiserslautern – despite the regional rivalry!

Funkel is happy about the surprising player. And then reveals that the two coaching colleagues celebrated together years ago.
Funkel: “Jürgen and I have had very special times in Mallorca in the past, he will remember it well. But that was some time ago.”
