Julien Carraggi Falls Short at European Badminton Championships, Sets Sights on Olympic Qualification

Julien Carraggi was unable to qualify for the quarter-finals of the European Badminton Championships. The Belgian immediately lost to the Finn Joakim Oldorff in his first match.

By a fortunate coincidence, Julien Carraggi (BWF-42) only had to play for the first time at the European Championships in the 3rd round (1/8th finals), which takes place in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Carraggi was free in the 1st round and his opponent in the 2nd round failed to appear. Our 23-year-old compatriot immediately reached the last 16, but his luck had run out there.

In his first match at this European Championship, Carraggi was faced with a card that was feasible on paper with the Finn Joakim Oldorff. But the world number 68 turned out to be tougher than expected and beat the Belgian with clear figures in 2 sets: 21-9 and 21-10.

For the women, Clara Lassaux (BWF-157) and Lianne Tan (BWF-50) also lost their first match earlier this week, in the 1st and 2nd rounds respectively.

Carraggi can now focus on the Olympic Games. To do this, he must be in the top 35 of the Olympic rankings at the end of the qualifying period on April 28.

There is a limit of maximum 2 athletes per country. Carraggi is currently 19th on the refined ranking. Lianne Tan is 23rd among the women. This means that they both seem to already have their tickets for Paris in their pockets.
