Judo Stage with Olympian Nicholas Mungai at PalaBorsani: A Weekend of Skill and Inspiration

Last weekend, between Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th April, at PalaBorsani of Castellanza it took place stage of Judo which had the honor of hosting the athlete Olympian Nicholas Mungai.

The first day was dedicated to the categories of Beginners, Cadets, Juniors e Seniorswhile the following one refers to those of the children. On Saturday afternoon Mungai therefore explained the methodologies of the exercises to the athletes: some competitive judokas from the Judo Club Castellanza, led by Maestro Perego Ranieribut there was no shortage of Judo Masters and Instructors from the provinces of Varese, Milan and Como

Il Sensei Ranieri expresses his opinion regarding the lessons of the Olympic judoka of Tuscan origin, and focuses in more detail on the techniques performed: “Overall, this training course went very well: I appreciated, in addition to the obvious skills on the subject, Mungai’s dialectical ability who, using very practical and direct technical language, first explained the exercises theoretically and then had the kids perform them. As far as ground fighting is concerned, he focused on finding a proactive way to deal with a disadvantaged situation; standing, towards the younger judokas, he discussed the topic of imbalances, while for the older ones he showed the Yoko-Tomoe-Nage technique, also known as a circle throw or abdominal throw, to roll to the side the opponent, and that of the Ippon-Seoi-Nage, a projection of the contender forward with loading on the back“.

On Sunday, Mungai, a graduate in Sports Science from the University of Turin, rewarded all the children by giving them a medal, fruit juice, a cake and a water bottle. Ranieri retraces the training for the 500 children who were present: “There was a motor path, a test of falls, projections, checks and, finally, competitions in which the athletes, divided into groups of four or five, carried out training fights, or randori, standing or just from the ground“.

However, what was the general purpose of the internship? We organize events like this because Judo is suitable for people of all ages: in children it improves physical coordination and mental concentration, while adults can have fun training with professional judokas. In general, my competitive students were very motivated, and they already knew Mungai since we held internships with the Tuscany Judo Committee: they are his first fans, they cheered for him, and they know his career as a competitive and Olympic judoka well.“.

Many girls and boys also participated in the event, an aspect that is underlined with pleasure by Maestro Ranieri, who also expresses an opinion on the women’s judo: “They were very tenacious! Basically we also carry out female self-defence courses, inspired by Judo techniques, and there is no shortage of athletes who are inspired by models already established in the Italian judo panorama: an example of this is Alice Bellandi (Fiamme Gialle Sports Group, which will compete in these Paris Olympics, ed.) and Odette Giuffrida (Army, winner of the silver medal at the Rio De Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and the bronze at Tokyo 2020) who will also represent Italy in Paris 2024″.
