Judo Champions Gather at Oberhausen-Osterfeld School for National Title Fight

The ID-NRW judoka met for the third time at the Oberhausen-Osterfeld comprehensive school to fight out their national champions. Maybe it was due to the changed scheduling, but with a total of 92 entries, there was a setback of around 20 entries compared to the previous year and still a long way from the pre-Corona entries of over 200 participants.

Since it was an open national championship, two participants came from Berlin with their parents and five judoka came from the Netherlands from the Verhagen Institute and Greve respectively. All other judoka were from NRW clubs, with Budokan Hünxe and Bayer Leverkusen making up the largest starter groups with 13 judoka. It is also pleasing that new and young judoka are constantly joining us, and one or two clubs also took part in the national championships for the first time.

The absolute highlight of the event was certainly the last fight of the tournament in the up to 90 kg class. Here the probably world’s best ID judoka Ifeany Ogiofor from the Verhagen Institute met probably the best German ID judoka Timo Karmasch from Hünxe. This time Timo was able to keep the fight open for a long time, but towards the middle of the fight Ifeany prevailed with his explosive twisting technique and was once again able to end the fight early with a smooth ippon.

Even though the Dutch had four winners with five starters and the two Berliners took first places, national coach Frank Schuhknecht was still very satisfied with the performance of his protégés, so that the NRW judoka appear to be well prepared for the national title fights in Hamburg in two weeks.

A big thank you goes to the team around Sergio Sessini from the Osterfeld Turnerbund, who organized these successful championships professionally in cooperation with PSV Oberhausen. The ID judoka will meet again in Oberhausen next year.
