Kings coach Jordi Fernandez is set to become the Nets’ choice for their head coach for the 2024-25 NBA season. According to American sources, he passed a final three-way exam with former Bucks coach who won the 2021 championship Mike Budenholzer and Suns assistant coach Kevin Young. The Nets were looking for their head coaching solution even before the end of the 2023-24 regular season, when the team was led by interim coach Kevin Ollie, following the firing of former head coach Jacque Vaughn mid-year.
Fernandez was an assistant coach to Michael Malone at the Nuggets from 2016 to 2022, then second to Mike Brown’s Kings the last two years. In 2023, during Brown and Fernandez’s first season with the franchise, Sacramento reached the playoffs for the first time in 16 seasons. Brown won the Coach of the Year award for the achievement. Last summer, Fernandez was the coach of the all-star Canadian national team that won the bronze medal in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Since becoming the majority owner of the Nets in 2019, Joe Tsai has already gone through three permanent coaches . In that five-season span, Vaughn served as interim head coach twice.
