Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA after a league investigation found he shared confidential information with bettors and has placed bets on NBA games, even on his team – i Toronto Raptors – Why they lost. The decision was announced by the commissioner on Wednesday Adam Silverwho called Porter’s actions “brazen” and a threat to integrity of the championship.
The NBA said Porter gave a bettor information about his health state before the Raptors game on March 20. Another individual placed a bet from 80 thousand dollars on an online “parlay” (multiple bet) predicting that Porter would fall short determined scores. The bet would have paid off 1.1 million dollars. Porter in that match left after three minutes with an alleged injury, without reaching any of the scores expected in the parlay. The bet was frozen and went unpaid, giving the go ahead to the investigation by the NBA. The investigation started from reports of legal sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets: in addition to the match on March 20, the other one targeted was played on January 26th. Even in that case, Porter left the field after a few minutes, without getting on the scoresheet points o rebounds.

This is Commissioner Adam Silver’s second time enacting a lifetime ban for violating league rules. The previous one dates back to 2014 and concerned the former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers Donald Sterling. The NBA has specified that the investigation into Porter is still open and could lead to more developments, the results of which could be shared with federal prosecutors. The Toronto Raptors said they are “fully a support of the league’s decision to ban Jontay Porter from the NBA and grateful for the quick resolution of this investigation. We will continue to cooperation with all investigations ongoing.”

Porter, who had a two-way contract with the Raptors and their affiliate in the G Leaguehad a annual salary of about $410,000. If he had been confirmed with a standard NBA contract for the following season, his salary would have exceeded it the 2 million dollars. The 24-year-old played in total 26 games for the Raptors, averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Before joining the Raptors, he played 11 games at Memphis in the 2020-21 season.
