Jontae Porter’s Millions in Bets: A Sports Betting Scandal in the NBA

As you have been able to know Actionmedia related to sports betting, Jontae Porter bet millions of dollars on his FanDuel account between 2021 and 2023. The operations reported by journalist Chase Howell would not incur a violation of NBA rules. None of them had basketball-related games or events as their subject.

The League’s regulations establish that no player or member of any of the institutions under the umbrella of its acronym can bet on anything related to the NBA, the G League or the WNBA itself. During that two-year stretch Porter was a G League player, managing to enter the Toronto Raptors’ rotation this same year. Meanwhile, he placed more than 1,000 bets, an activity that ceased a few days before signing his two-way contract with the Canadian franchise.

Last March, Michael Porter Jr.’s little brother was involved in an investigation for alleged manipulation of his own statistics. DraftKings, one of the NBA’s sportsbook partners, detected unusual interest in Porter’s statistical bets over two games. The first of them on January 26 and the second on March 20. In both cases, Porter retired injured in the first quarter, falling below the threshold of the bets that concerned his points.

Just a week ago Adam Silver implied that the investigation was continuing and that if it were proven true, it would mean the sudden expulsion of the NBA player.
