Japan’s U18 Men’s Basketball Team Makes Historic Run at Albert Schweitzer Tournament

    The 30th Albert Schweitzer Tournament, in which Japan’s U18 men’s basketball team participated, was held from March 30th to April 6th in Mannheim, Germany. Japan was in 8th place, its highest ever. Munetatsu Taira (Kinjo Junior High School – Kaishi Kokusai High School), a native of the prefecture, participated in all five qualifying rounds and made his presence felt.

    Although Japan lost to Slovenia, Turkey, and Australia, they defeated the Czech Republic for the first time in the tournament, 62-59. They won the match against Germany 67-61, and Taira scored 10 points, second on the team.

    Japan advanced to the deciding match for 5th-8th place with 2 wins and 3 losses, but lost to Greece 77-79 and Egypt 62-74.
