Jackson Holliday: The Rising Star of the Baltimore Orioles

The moment arrive. Wearing the number seven, and with the eyes of all of baseball on his man, prospect Jackson Holliday made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles, this Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. And the expectations around him only grow.

He was the second baseman and ninth in the order, everyone – of course – was attentive to his debut.

But who is Jackson Holliday?

The 20-year-old shortstop is the son of Matt Holliday, the World Series champion outfielder (2011), winner of the batting title (2007) and four silver bats, and a seven-time All Star. But that has little to do with all the attention that has been paid to it.

The youngster is attracting attention because he is MLB Pipeline’s number one prospect since June 2023. According to MLB, he is “a grade-70 hitter with power (60), speed (60), arm power (55) and defense (55)”.

In the spring of this year he hit .311 with a couple of homers. Later, in 10 games at Triple-A Norfolk he hit .333 with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in 10 games.

Baltimore is confident that Holliday will give them the offensive boost they need, since they only stepped on the plate 23 times during the seven games they played between March 31 and April 7.

They are so confident that they have given him the number 7, which was unofficially retired by Cal Ripken Sr., the club’s manager in 1987 and 1988. His son Billy was the last Orioles player to wear that number, also in 1988.
