Jackson Chourio Hits First MLB Home Run as Brewers Fall to Twins

Jackson Chourio, the youngest player to start the 2024 season in Major League Baseball, opened his account Wednesday afternoon by hitting the first home run of his career.

The Milwaukee Brewers, however, were knocked down 7-3 by the Minnesota Twins, suffering their first setback after starting the year with four wins.

Chourio, an outfielder from Venezuela who celebrated his 20th birthday last month, was hitting at the top of the Brewers’ batting order.

With his batting average rising to .350 after five games, Chourio proved that he fully deserved to be considered one of the two or three best prospects in his sport.

Chourio’s slap at the bottom of the fifth at the expense of reliever Daniel Duarte gave Milwaukee a 3-1 lead.

But the Twins (3-2) did not give up, and the visitors responded by scoring the next six points, notably thanks to the long ball from catcher Ryan Jeffers, good for three points.

For Minnesota, Quebecer Édouard Julien once again struck at the top of the batting order. However, he had a quiet afternoon; he was retired twice, before giving way to replacement hitter Manuel Margot.

Red Sox sweep Toro and A’s

Nick Pivetta and four relievers combined for a second shutout in three days, Emmanuel Valdéz hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics 1-0.

In doing so, the Red Sox completed a three-game series sweep, a feat they accomplished in front of a crowd of 6,436 spectators in the last of a seven-game homestand by the Athletics.

The Athletics concluded this trip with a record of one win and six losses and conceded 29 more points than they scored. This is the worst ratio of its kind since the start of the season in the American League.

A total of 45,068 spectators attended the seven matches.

Team officials have announced a plan to move to Las Vegas for the 2028 season and at this time, it is unclear where the Athletics will play in 2025.

In the victory, Jarren Duran had four hits in as many plate appearances. His batting average stands at .393.

Ross Stripling (0-2) allowed eight hits in seven innings and lost a seventh straight decision since beating the Toronto Blue Jays on October 1, 2022.

Pivetta (1-1) threw 90 pitches before returning the ball to the bullpen. Joely Rodriguez had two outs, Justin Slaten had four outs, while Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen were called upon to pitch one inning each.

After conceding two walks after an out, Jansen forced Quebecer Abraham Toro, sent as a replacement hitter, to hit a grounder to shortstop for an option.

Toro was making his eighth at-bat since the start of the season and remains looking for his first hit in 2024.

Jansen ended the game by striking out Ryan Noda on three. It was his second save of the season and the 422nd of his career, tying him to join Bill Wagner for sixth most in baseball history.

With this shutout, the Red Sox reduced their earned run average to 1.54, the best in the major leagues. Red Sox relievers have pitched 17 straight innings without giving up a run.

In the fourth inning, Triston Casas, Masataka Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela hit consecutive one-out singles. Valdéz followed with a fly ball to right field and Casas easily crossed home plate.
