Italian Basketball player Matilde Villa makes history with WNBA draft pick

For the fourth time in history, one Italian basketball player was WNBA draft pick, the women’s version of the NBA which – like the men’s tournament – uses this criterion to add, year after year, young talents to the rosters of the various teams.

Matilde Villa, Brianza of Lissone, 19 years old, she was selected on the Italian night by the Atlanta Stars who named her as the 32nd overall pick. Before her, the WNBA draft had involved Catarina Pollini (1997, first ever draft), Kathrin Ress (2007) and Lorela Cubaj (2022). Role-playing playmaker, Villa plays for Umana Reyer Venezia after carrying out all the youth program in Costa Masnagaa club from Lecco that has been very active in the women’s field for many years. On the other hand the Matilde’s talent it blossomed very early: ha made his debut in Serie A1 at 14 years old and, just before turning 16, he played a game of 36 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists against Sassari. She later also became the youngest player in debut with the national team major, in 2021, not yet 17 years old.

La WNBA it takes place in the summer – between May and September – and this allows the players to combine the American tournament with the national championships in Europe and therefore, probably, Villa will be able to play in the USA after finishing the Serie A1 underway with the Venezia shirt. A journey also carried out in the past by Laura Macchi from Varese who played two American championships with the Los Angeles Sparks shirt in 2004 and 2005, also reaching the playoffs.
