In Memoriam: Remembering Coach Ernesto Wong of Settimo Baseball Club

The news of the sudden passing of coach Ernesto Wong, a true pillar of the Settimo Baseball Club, yesterday hit like a cold shower the many people who had crossed paths with him on and off the fields in recent years.

Goodbye coach Ernesto: “in procession” on the diamond

Yesterday evening, Monday 15 April 2024, the club, the athletes of all categories and their families met spontaneously on the “diamond” of Settimo (as the baseball field is called in jargon) for a hug and a thought to the man, the athlete, and the friend.

Wong, 50 years old, former champion of the Cuban national team, had become the soul, body and soul of BC Settimo since the 1990s, for which he held the role of technical director and manager of the team registered in the Serie A championship.

For this reason, many, upon hearing the news, wanted to greet the coach by symbolically treading the grass of the “Valter Aluffi” stadium in via Torino, the pitch that Ernesto himself had experienced so intensely in recent years.

In the meantime, we are waiting to know the date and details of the funeral. The man passed away at just 50 years old while working as an industrial plumber on a ship in China.

A river of memories

There have also been many memories entrusted to social media in the past few hours. Here are some that, at least in part, restore the portrait of a highly esteemed and well-liked man capable of leaving his mark on the lives of many young people, mixing firmness and rigor with human qualities:

“A tough guy on the pitch, but a super kind and family person off the pitch”; “Strict and big-hearted coach”; “A cold shower, friend and former teammate of this sport…The movement really loses a guideline” we read in some comments; “Golden person, father, husband and exemplary friend”.

The thoughts addressed to his wife and three children were unanimous: “An honest man both in baseball and in social life, a loving husband and father in the family”.

And then a lot of gratitude from his “students” and families:

“It’s difficult to find words… it hurts to think that we won’t meet you again but you left so much to our boys. Thanks Ernesto”.

“I’m shocked to say the least, it’s like losing a brother, bye Ernesto, guide your boys from the sky as you guided them on earth. You will remain forever in everyone’s hearts.”

“A person capable of embracing and revolutionizing the lives of those who were his students, simply by doing what he loved.”

“There are few people between those two foul lines who have managed to give me more than what you have given me. Thanks Ernesto”.

“We didn’t want to lose a person like you! I can only thank you for everything you did for our children! For all the moments we lived together, you leave a great void”,

There is also no shortage of thoughts from colleagues: “One of the best coaches in Italy is leaving, it was truly an honor to have been able to play against one of his teams in which I was able to recognize the hand of his work with his friend Silva”.
