The national women’s handball coach, Ambros Martín, said he was “proud” to have achieved qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games one day in advance, in the second match of the Pre-Olympic that is being played in Torrevieja (Alicante), and with suffering and leaving behind moments of difficulty against an Argentina that fought hard, in a tight duel that ended with 23-26 in favor of the Guerreras.
“Congratulate Spain, our Warriors, because we have achieved the goal, with suffering, one day early. We are tremendously proud, happy, to represent our country, our handball and our girls, at the Paris Games,” He stood out in a press conference after the game.
A suffering that they experienced, he believes, in part, due to the physical effort after the defeat of the first duel against the Czech Republic. “It is true that in some way this could happen, after the effort and such a well-won match against the Czech Republic, but I could not imagine in my wildest dreams that nor in my worst nightmares going through so much anguish against Argentina. We have moved forward and Faced with the possibility of the challenge collapsing, we have raised our heads,” he celebrated.
Of course, now he wants to “enjoy” what he has achieved. “You have to be there in difficult moments. In the first half we had difficulties and many ghosts in our heads. We managed to adjust the defense and settle down but in attack we did not materialize the chances. These types of games happen when the team knows that it is the key duel,” he said.
“We were not able to handle our heads well and not getting into the game well. Let’s see if over time we are able to learn to connect with my players so that the significance of the games does not affect us at all,” he argued about the fact that the team finds it difficult to face the decisive matches.
“When you are playing for something as important as going to the Olympic Games, we knew that beating Argentina was the key and it hurt us, we did not want to get to the point of having to risk everything against the Netherlands. But we did not know how to break the score when we were 3 goals up. Argentina gets very motivated when they play against us. I have to learn to handle these situations,” he further elaborated in this sense.
Ambros Martín also wants to learn from what happened and be able to have a long career in charge of the Guerreras. “Spain must have a hallmark that cannot be achieved overnight. I am looking forward to reaching the Games with this group of players, with this mix of players. I like big challenges, regardless of the opponents. that we can have,” he said.
On a personal level, the coach will experience his first Olympic Games, something he will celebrate as soon as he can leave behind the feelings of the complicated duel against Argentina. “It will be my first Olympic Games, but today I couldn’t enjoy anything at all. The girls were happy in the locker room and I’ll be sure of that, but I didn’t feel comfortable in the game and I didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t easy to achieve the goal and it’s accomplished , throughout the night and tomorrow we will be happier, for sure,” he said.
