Iga Swiatek drops a set but advances to the semi-finals in Madrid

In a chilly temperature (16°C), Iga Swiatek, who never took off a long-sleeved t-shirt worn over her outfit just after the warm-up, defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia (14th in the world) this Tuesday in the quarterfinals final of the WTA 1000 in Madrid, where she is the number 1 seed.

The first set seemed to go to the Pole who stood out 4 games to 1 in a fairly depopulated center but the tall Haddad Maia (1.85 m) lined up five games in a row to win the first set in 58 minutes, never hesitating to attack your opponent by going up to the net on their returns.

A renewed determination

At the start of the second set, Swiatek returned from the toilet with her famous notebook, visibly armed with better intentions. She won her engagement straight away then broke three times to inflict a bicycle wheel on her opponent, after 38 minutes of play nonetheless. She now only committed 5 faults compared to 13 in the first set.

While waiting for her opponent at the start of the third set, the world number 1 performed a series of forehands, backhands and empty serves, a sign of her newfound determination. A second and final break in advance allowed him to take the third and final round (6-2) after 2h29.

In the semi-finals, Iga Swiatek will face Madison Keys or Ons Jabeur on Thursday, the quarter-final of which will be played this Tuesday evening.
