Austria’s men’s national ice hockey team showed improvement in the first of two tests against the Czech Republic, but still suffered the next defeat. In the end, coach Roger Bader’s team clearly had to admit defeat to the World Cup hosts in České Budějovice with a score of 1:5 (0:2 1:1 0:2), but they did not only have bright spots with a dream goal. On Saturday (6 p.m., live on ORF Sport +) there will be the chance for revenge in Linz.

Benjamin Baumgartner completed a nice combination in the 49th minute to make it 1:3 and thus provided the highlight from the Austrian perspective. Before and after, however, only the Czechs scored. Adam Kubik gave the hosts the lead in the power play in the third minute, Andrej Sustr (18th) put in the lead and Jakub Galvas (25th) followed up after the first period break. Jiri Cernoch (51st) and Michael Spacek (53rd) ensured clear conditions.
Despite the fifth defeat in the fifth test match for the World Cup in Prague, which from Austria’s perspective begins on May 11th against Denmark, Bader’s boys showed themselves to be significantly improved in many phases compared to the defeats against Slovenia (2:5 and 0:6). In particular, the forechecking and defensive work worked well against the heavy favorites at times. However, there is still room for improvement in the offensive: 30 Czechs faced eleven red-white-red shots.
Austria must bow to the Czech Republic
The Austrian men’s national ice hockey team lost the first of two test games against the Czech Republic. In České Budějovice the red-white-red team had to admit defeat 1:5. The second test follows in Linz on Friday (6 p.m., live on ORF Sport +).
“I’m very happy with the performance today, we did a lot of things very well that we set out to do. We played very aggressively in our own zone, were often able to take away the opponent’s disc and did good forechecking. The fact that the opponent obviously has more chances to score than us is due to the class of the opponent. But we played a really good international game today,” said team boss Bader.
