The ‘Vineyard Wind 1’ offshore wind farm, the first large-scale of its kind in the United States and being developed by Iberdrola in the waters of Massachusetts, has been named project of the year against climate change by the Environmental Business Council (EBC). in English) from New England.

Developed by Iberdrola, a company chaired by Ignacio Galán, the facility is the first large-scale facility of its kind in the United States, with 806 megawatts (MW) and 62 wind turbines more than 800 feet high. Currently, it already supplies clean energy to 30,000 homes and companies in the region, thanks to the five turbines that came into operation in the first quarter of the year. And it is expected to power around 400,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million tonnes a year. Additionally, the project has created more than 2,000 jobs to date and contributed $590 million to the Massachusetts economy.

“We feel very honored to receive this important award, and we thank the Environmental Business Council for its collaboration and support in the joint work to adopt urgent measures against climate change,” said Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. “Vineyard Wind 1 is a pioneering project for the New England region and the nation, and we are very proud to lay the foundation so an entire clean energy industry can flourish and meaningfully address climate challenges.”

The award will be presented at the EBC APEX Awards Celebration, its official name, in June 2024 at the City Winery in Boston, Massachusetts.

Bet on offshore wind energy

Offshore wind is one of the big bets for growth in renewables in Iberdrola’s strategic plan to 2027, announced by the president of Iberdrola last March to the market, with more than 50% of the investments of 15.5 billion euros -10.5 billion euros excluding the contribution of partners- planned for ‘green’ energies in the next three years.

Among the most notable projects of the company led by Ignacio Sánchez Galán in offshore wind energy, in addition to this park, the East Anglia Hub complex stands out in the United Kingdom, which contains three projects with a total installed capacity of 2,900 MW, Saint-Brieuc, in France, or its three parks in Baltic waters: Wikinger, Baltic Eagle and Windanker.
