Hurkacz eliminates Bautista and leaves Monte Carlo without Spaniards

MADRID, 10 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Castellón tennis player Roberto Bautista lost this Wednesday 7-5 and 7-6(4) against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters 1,000, which is being played on clay, and in this way he remained in the draw individual without Spanish representation.

On Court 2 of the Monegasque venue, Bautista saved two break balls in the third game (1-2), but was solid in service until the eleventh. There his rival did not forgive her third break option (6-5) and immediately closed the opening set after 54 minutes.

At the beginning of the second set, the player from Castellón was more aggressive with his shots from the baseline and reflected it on the scoreboard with a break in the second game (0-2), following a ball that barely touched the sideline and which the chair umpire validated, not without Hurkacz’s misgivings.

He even got angry when a couple of rallies later he was warned of a penalty for taking a ball out of the court, backhanded, in an action that had already been called out. Although Hurkacz did it without any bad intentions and apologized immediately, that did not convince the main referee.

Perhaps enraged, the Pole returned the break without delay (1-2) and held Bautista’s pace. Neither gave ground with their next serves and sudden death was decided against the Spaniard, whose initial disadvantage of two points was a loss that he could not overcome (7-4).

After certifying his victory in two hours and four minutes, Hurkacz will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud in the second round, the executioner of the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (6-2 and 6-4). The Italian Jannik Sinner also reached the round of 16, after beating the American Sebastian Korda 6-1 and 6-2.
