Heroes under the sun – Faro de Vigo

Vig-Bay burned in its 23rd edition, surely as a preview of what will become a climatic custom. The half marathon, which began in freezing February, was soon moved to the unpredictable April. The meteor has always been another protagonist of the test, just like the landscape. It was held under downpours and with gusty winds. On mild and sullen mornings. And sometimes, more infrequently until now, with the sun beating down with the fury of anticipated summer. It happened yesterday, increasing the merit of those who crossed the finish line on the Elduayen promenade in Bahia. Anxo Castro and Sonia Abad won the 21 km; Daniel Bargiela and Ana Soutullo, in the Mini Bay – of the average, the half. There were no big brands but there were big smiles. “An accumulation of emotions and sensations,” summarized the historic Elías Domínguez.

At 10:30 the departure was carried out simultaneously by two mayors, Abel Caballero and Juan González, on the two beaches, Samil and Praia América. González was accompanied by Olympian Javier Álvarez Salgado and they both also started jogging. The 800 runners – 791 arrived, with 11 disqualifications – soon became the trail of Daniel Bargiela. The veteran Bikila runner, hindered in his preparation by the flu, opted on this occasion for the short route and imposed an unattainable pace from the start. At the first control he was already ahead of Martín Barreiro by almost half a minute, a distance that he continued to increase until stopping the clock at 35:22. Barreiro arrived in 36:49 and Anxo Otero completed the podium in 37:03.

In women, Ana Soutullo had to do more to contain Estefanía González, last year’s winner, who always had her in sight, almost within arm’s reach, but never caught her. That of Club Ourense Atletismo won by 43:59, with that of Puebla de Sanabria in 44:20. Purificación Anegas was third, with 45:10.

The trickle of Mini Bay participants continued entering the finish line when the organization car anticipated the arrival of the half marathon. Anxo Castro and José Canda maintained a tight fight until the climb to Mount Lourido. There Castro felt he had enough strength to attack and gain a few meters that he knew how to manage perfectly with the goal already in sight. He finished with a time of 1:06:59, commendable considering the temperature. In fact, Athletics Arenteiro found him sitting on the asphalt, exhausted, when he arrived one minute and two seconds later. Manuel Lorenzo was third with 1:08:20.

Even more exciting was the women’s race, with a comeback by Sonia Abad. Marta Castroviejo served as leader for a good part of the journey, but she ended up surrendering to the greater momentum of the Taninos Runners Ponteareas athlete (1:23:42). The Rioja woman clocked a time of 1:24:11, with Sofía Freaza, from Comesaña Sporting Club, in 1:25:10.

3,521 participants finished Vig-Bay on time, with about forty disqualified or out of control. Not too many, which exemplifies the excellent application of the organization in provisioning. Although several people had to be treated for dehydration, no major physical mishaps were recorded.
