Arsenal are top of the Premier League again, at least for one day. The team led by DFB player Kai Havertz easily won 2-0 (2-0) against relegation-threatened Luton Town on Wednesday evening and initially pushed Liverpool FC out of first place. The Reds, trained by Jürgen Klopp, can regain the top of the table on Thursday evening (8:30 p.m.) with a win against bottom team Sheffield United.

Arsenal dominated the game in front of their own crowd from the start, but initially hardly threatened to score. Martin Ødegaard (24th minute) finally shot the Gunners into the lead with a precise left-footed shot. Havertz provided the assist for his goal. Shortly before half-time, Luton’s Daiki Hashioka (44th) scored an own goal when he tried to fend off a ball from Emile Smith Rowe, who had returned from injury for around a month.

Havertz received a yellow card for a swallow in the second half and was substituted after a good hour. After more changes, not much happened. Arsenal just managed the result and gave Luton more possession. The table 18th. Played along cheerfully, but hardly had any real chances to score throughout the entire 90 minutes and are now three points behind the non-relegation zone.

In the Premier League three-way battle, Manchester City also drew level with Liverpool on points. There was a clear 4:1 (2:1) against fourth-placed Aston Villa. The man of the evening was Phil Foden (45.+1/62./69.), who single-handedly decided the game with a hat-trick and increased his goal tally to 14 goals. Rodri (11th) had previously given the Citizens the lead, Jhon Durán (20th) managed to equalize.

Liverpool coach Klopp has previously warned not to allow himself to be put under pressure by the results of his competitors and to “ignore the external chaos.” The role of favorite that has been assigned is irrelevant to him. “Whether rightly so or not, I don’t know. And I don’t care,” emphasized the outgoing Reds coach.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk fears Klopp’s departure

The fact that Klopp is saying goodbye to Liverpool FC at the end of the season also scares Virgil van Dijk a bit. “I’m dreading the day,” the Reds captain told ITV News. “There will be a lot of changes and more employees will leave. It will be a tough day, but until that day comes we will fight and stay positive and put all our focus on it,” said the 32-year-old. But he is “a very emotional person” who doesn’t like goodbyes.

Klopp brought the defensive star to the Reds from Southampton FC in January 2018 for around 84.6 million euros. Last summer, the 56-year-old coach appointed the Dutch international Liverpool captain and the two have a close relationship. “We know the end of the season will be emotional. But we can make it emotional in a good way by winning trophies,” said van Dijk.

Seven different trophies: all of Jürgen Klopp’s titles with Liverpool

The chances of a second championship title under Klopp are there, in the Europa League the opponent is Atalanta Bergamo in the quarter-finals. “Winning the two remaining trophies is success,” said van Dijk. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost to Manchester United in the quarter-finals, and in the League Cup there was a final triumph against Chelsea.
