Handball: surprise defeat of PSG in Nantes, the first of the season in the championship

Nantes had not beaten PSG at home since December 2016! It is therefore a small feat achieved this Sunday during the 23rd day of the championship at the end of a match of crazy intensity (32-30) in a packed H Arena. The Nantes residents are three points behind the Parisians, still leaders in Starligue with still seven games to go. This is PSG’s first defeat this season in the league.

Elohim Prandi delivered another great performance by scoring 11 goals alone (but with 5 failures, 11/16 in the end) and finished top scorer of the match, supported by the usual executives Kamil Syprzak (6/8 on shots) and Kent Robin Tonnesen (5/5). David Balaguer’s penalty failures (only 1/3) are costly in the end. Trailing by two goals entering the last ten minutes, the Nantes team managed two very important defensive stops to come back on level terms.

At the very end of the match, the exclusion for two minutes of the young Wallem Peleka (28th) and a new Nantes interception definitively offered the victory to the locals, carried by the saves of goalkeeper Ignacio Biosca Garcia (6/25) and the goals of ‘Aymeric Minne (6/9), Jorge Maqueda Peno (5/6) or Valero Rivera (5/6).

“That’s the high level,” whispers Parisian Mathieu Grebille at the microphone of BeIN Sports. To win in Nantes, everything must come together. It wasn’t enough. The marathon continues. If we had been told that at the start of the season, we would have signed. We’re going to go back to work. We will find Nantes again soon and we will try to take revenge (Editor’s note: in the Coupe de France final, April 20). Nothing is decided yet in the championship. There are matches left. It’s not a big deal in itself that you lost today. »

PSG will therefore not finish the season undefeated like in 2021-2022. Qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League (against Barça), in the final of the Coupe de France (against Nantes) and still at the top of the championship, he remains in the race for a hat-trick. Next meeting in the championship Friday April 12 in Pierre-de-Coubertin against Saint-Raphaël.
