Handball: SC Magdeburg wins the handball cup

SC Magdeburg has won the German Handball Cup for the third time in the club’s history. The team prevailed in the final with 30:19 (13:11) against outsiders MT Melsungen. This means that the Magdeburgers have the prospect of a triple this season: They are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and have a good chance of winning the championship in the league. Melsungen, on the other hand, has to wait for its first title ever – but the players can plan for the European League.

Magdeburg’s Lukas Mertens scored seven times in the sold-out stadium in Cologne in front of 19,750 fans. After recently recording two defeats in finals, the Magdeburgers under national coach Alfred Gíslason once again received a bonus of 200,000 euros. At Melsungen, Timo Kastening scored the most goals with five goals. SG Flensburg-Handewitt had previously achieved third place with a 31:28 win against Füchse Berlin.

With their victory, the Magdeburgers also defied the doping suspicion surrounding their temporarily suspended goalkeeper Nikola Portner. Portner’s positive doping test caused unrest before the final weekend and massively affected the preparation. “It was all difficult. We did it for him too,” SCM professional Lukas Mertens said after the semi-final.

Portner was replaced in the final game by Sergey Hernández, who successfully thwarted Melsunger’s numerous chances. The fact that the game initially turned out to be even was due, on the one hand, to the strong MT keeper Nebojša Simić at the start – and on the other hand, the SCM made an unusually large number of technical errors. During the course of the game there were many intense duels. After the change, the Magdeburgers primarily increased their lead.
