Green Bay Packers Focus on Developing Quarterbacks Through Draft Competition

Green Bay Packers guard Royce Newman (70) blocks Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jordan Ferguson (42) as quarterback Sean Clifford (8) throws a pass during their preseason football game Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Green Bay defeated Seattle 19-15.

The Packers are going to sign Jordan Love to a lucrative extension this offseason, and by all accounts, the team is very happy with how Sean Clifford handled the backup quarterback responsibilities last season. However, the quarterback position is still on Brian Gutekunst’s mind entering the NFL draft.

“I’d love to continue to bring in quarterbacks,” said Gutekunst via Packer Central“not only for the competition but for the development of them. Because I do think it takes time. It takes time, any player, but a quarterback particularly in a comfort zone of what he’s doing where you can really see his talent come out. I think Sean hit that pretty early compared to most, but I think that’s important you give that player the time to get there.”

As I detailed in a recent article, this desire to add competition and another developmental player to the roster is more so an organizational philosophy that the Packers have – which we’ve seen in play throughout the years – rather than them feeling that they had to find an upgrade over Clifford.

So, while the Packers remain excited about Clifford, adding a quarterback on Day 3 feels like a pick that is going to happen, especially with Gutekunst having a surplus of selections. With Kurt Benkert in 2021, Danny Etling in 2022, and Alex McGough in 2023, we’ve seen Gutekunst churn the back-end of that position group.
