Google starts construction of a new data center in Belgium, investment of 1 billion euros

What is a data center?

A data center is a building full of servers, computers that run to store information and make it available for internet traffic. “Think of watching a video on YouTube and making an online appointment with the doctor, but also of applications of artificial intelligence that business leaders use,” Sallaets explains.

Sometimes companies keep their servers within their own building. This is how it used to be, but they are increasingly turning to data centers. They can, so to speak, rent a corner there to have their servers installed.

The data center provides the power and cooling for those computers, because computers that are turned on give off heat. The data center also offers security in terms of performance: if there is a power outage, they provide continuity with emergency generators.
