World number one Scottie Scheffler has the best chance of winning his second victory at the 88th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club. The 27-year-old star from the USA played a round of 71 on day three on the par-72 course at Magnolia Lane and was ahead of his compatriots Collin Morikawa (210) and Max Homa (211) by a total of 209 strokes before the final round. .
Superstar Tiger Woods experienced a disaster one day after setting his Masters record. The 48-year-old Californian needed 82 strokes for the 18 holes on the third day of the tournament – the 15-time major winner had never completed a worse round at the Masters. With a total of 227 strokes, he fell back to tied for 52nd place. Woods was annoyed by far too many mistakes on the golf course, which he knows better than anyone else: “I just hit the ball in places where I know I shouldn’t hit it.”
The day before, the long-time number one in the world had made golf history. He made the cut at the Masters for the 24th time in a row – no player had ever achieved that before him. Since his first Masters victory in 1997, Woods has always qualified for the two decisive rounds on the weekend in his starts at Augusta.
Tough days at Augusta National Golf Club
Woods was physically affected by the strain of the past few days. But he wants to compete in the final round. “My team will prepare me,” he said. “It’s going to be a long night and a long warm-up, but we’ll be ready.” Woods broke his right leg several times in a serious car accident in February 2021. Since then he has only competed in a few select tournaments.
The German Stephan Jäger missed the cut after just two days and had to end the major tournament early. For the 34-year-old from Munich, who has lived in the USA for a long time, it was the first Masters participation in his career.
