Germany is co-hosting the 2029 Handball World Cup

German handball fans can look forward to the next major event in their own country. As the world association IHF announced on Tuesday, the 2029 World Cup will take place in Germany and France. The only competitor in the German-French application, in which the German Handball Federation (DHB) is a junior partner, was the Denmark/Iceland/Norway alliance. The IHF awarded the 2031 tournament to this.

“Paris will be the heart of the World Cup with the opening game and as the location for the final round. For handball Germany, this tournament is another chance to keep our sport in the public eye. In 2029, we will co-host another men’s World Cup as France’s junior partner “Being able to do that gives us energy and is a great prospect,” said DHB board chairman Mark Schober.

Germany is already hosting the 2027 World Cup alone. With a view to the 2029 tournament, the DHB is in talks with other neighboring associations to take over parts of the program as part of a World Cup partnership. “It is conceivable that a preliminary group of the German strand will take place in a neighboring country,” said Schober: “The 2027 tournament should take place locally and be an event for handball fans all over Germany; in 2029 we will take on an international role and be the stage for France prepare.”

The DHB has established itself as the most sought-after organizer of top international tournaments in handball. In 2025 the Women’s World Cup will take place in Germany and the Netherlands. Most recently, the European Championship in January 2024 set a global attendance record for the opening game in the Düsseldorf football stadium, with a total of more than a million spectators visiting the six venues. Croatia, Denmark and Norway will also host the next men’s World Cup in 2025.

The organizers of the Women’s World Championships after the 2025 tournament in Germany have now been determined. The 2029 World Cup will take place in Spain, and the IHF awarded the 2032 tournament to the Czech Republic and Poland on Tuesday.
