The German team was already leading 2-0 against the Brazilian team after the first day of the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. Then it was time for Anna-Lena Friedsam to hit the cauldron of Sao Paolo. She competed against world number thirteen Beatriz Haddad Maia. Friedsam was able to win the first set, but Maia stepped up in the second set and secured the victory and first point for Brazil with 5:7, 6:0 and 6:1.

Then Laura Siegemund opened it again. She remained mentally strong and in front of 10,000 spectators won the decisive point with a 6:1, 2:6, 6:3 against Carolina Alves to make the final score 3:1. “It was an absolute cauldron with Laura. She still dominated the first set, but then played more passively. In the third set she was mentally strong and won the match, which we really deserved after this week,” said team boss shaker. As a result, the German team qualified directly for the finals and the doubles were canceled. Angelique Kerber, who was scheduled for the doubles, was no longer used when she returned to the DTB team after her maternity leave.

“The finals are still a long time away, we’re happy to have won here,” said Rainer Schüttler, looking ahead to the finals in Seville from November 12th to 17th: “We’ll see what happens in a few months comes to us. Everything is always possible.”
