German handball players beat Slovenia at the start

“Thanks for the great atmosphere. Come back everyone at the weekend,” called left-hander Julia Maidhof to the fans in the hall. DHB sports director Axel Kromer spoke of a “great start”, which gave “security” for the next game.

Maidhof (9 goals) was the best thrower for the selection of the German Handball Federation (DHB) on Thursday evening in front of 4,026 spectators in the ratiopharm Arena. Just a win against European Championship third-placed Montenegro, who barely managed the compulsory task against outsiders Paraguay at 30:25, could give Germany the Paris ticket they longed for on Saturday (2.15 p.m./ARD and Dyn). The last opponent on Sunday (1.30 p.m./ARD and Dyn) is Paraguay. Two Olympic starting places will be awarded at the qualification tournament in Bavaria.

With the returnee Alina Grijseels, whose use had been questionable for a long time, the DHB team showed their ability to take action in a competitive game, although Emily Bölk and Co. were also able to dish it out. Goalkeeper Katharina Filter proved to be a strong support, the sixth-placed team gained an early lead and maintained it until the end. The game was decided at 27:21 (55th).

Despite being outnumbered early on, the DHB women had gained a three-goal lead for the first time at 6:3 (10th) – because the defense in front of the immediately successful Filter moved well and the offensive was extremely effective. This was particularly true for Maidhof, who successfully converted three seven-meter throws in the early stages.
